World Fisheries Day Highlights India’s Blue Transformation and Sustainable Aquaculture Growth

World Fisheries Day was celebrated nationwide with a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable fish production and enhancing the value of India’s seafood exports. The main event in Ranchi reflected the national theme, “India’s Blue Transformation,” underscoring the need to protect aquatic ecosystems while ensuring economic prosperity for fishing communities.

Officials stressed that sustainable fisheries rely on healthy rivers, reservoirs and marine habitats. Protecting these ecosystems supports better-quality fish stocks and long-term productivity. Experts highlighted that responsible harvesting and habitat restoration are crucial for the sector’s continued growth.

The celebrations also focused on strengthening India’s seafood value chain. Enhancing processing, packaging and quality certification can significantly increase export competitiveness and earnings. Building modern infrastructure and adhering to global sustainability standards were identified as key steps forward.

A major part of the discussions centred on improving the livelihoods of fishermen. Expanding aquaculture, diversifying income sources and strengthening market linkages are expected to boost economic opportunities. Training programmes across local centres aim to encourage scientific fish farming and generate employment.

World Fisheries Day, observed every year on 21 November, continues to play an important role in promoting sustainable practices, supporting exports and ensuring inclusive development in India’s vibrant fisheries sector.
