World Food Day 2025, observed on October 16, highlights the global call for sustainable agriculture and food security under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.” The day commemorates the founding of the FAO in 1945 and reinforces the need for global cooperation to end hunger and malnutrition.
India has made remarkable progress in food production, nutrition, and distribution. The country now leads in milk and millet output and ranks second in fruits, vegetables, and fish production. Agricultural exports have nearly doubled in the past decade, reflecting growth and diversification in the sector.
Key initiatives like the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), and PM POSHAN continue to ensure access to nutritious food for millions. India’s fortified rice programme, expanded under SMART-PDS and One Nation, One Ration Card, strengthens nutritional security nationwide.
Global recognition of India’s food systems was evident at World Food India 2025, where the Indian Thali was praised for its sustainability and low environmental impact. With these efforts, India stands as a global model for balancing productivity, nutrition, and environmental responsibility in the fight against hunger.
