Telangana Begins Tribal Relocation from Amrabad Tiger Reserve to Boost Conservation

The Telangana government has initiated the relocation of tribal families from the Amrabad Tiger Reserve to balance wildlife conservation with socio-economic development. Located in the Nallamala hills of the Eastern Ghats, the reserve is one of the largest tiger habitats in southern India and plays a crucial role in biodiversity protection.

Home to the Chenchu tribe, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), the region has long supported forest-dependent livelihoods. However, increasing human-wildlife interaction has raised concerns, prompting the government to shift families to safer locations with improved access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities.

The reserve’s ecological importance is underscored by the presence of the Krishna River and rich biodiversity, including tigers, leopards, and over 300 bird species. The relocation initiative aims to reduce pressure on core forest areas, strengthen conservation efforts, and ensure sustainable development for tribal communities, reflecting a balanced approach to environmental protection and human welfare.
