China Unveils World’s Lightest Brain-Control Device to Steer Bees

Chinese researchers have created the world’s lightest brain-control device, weighing just 74 milligrams, to guide the movements of bees with remarkable precision. Developed by the Beijing Institute of Technology and published in June 2025, the device uses ultra-thin flexible film circuits and fine needles to send electrical signals directly to the insect’s brain, enabling remote control over flight and walking.

Tests showed a 90% success rate in directing bees and even cockroaches, opening the door for insect-based robotics in surveillance, disaster relief, and counterterrorism. Though challenges like wired power needs and fatigue persist, scientists aim to enhance precision and introduce wireless functionality in future models. This marks a major leap in bio-hybrid robotics with real-world security and environmental applications.
