India has achieved a major milestone in social security coverage, expanding from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, reaching over 940 million citizens. This remarkable progress earned India the ISSA Award 2025 for “Outstanding Achievement in Social Security” at the World Social Security Forum in Kuala Lumpur, recognizing its leadership in global social protection.
The growth stems from comprehensive government schemes, inclusion of the informal sector, and the role of digital public infrastructure. Platforms like e-Shram, connecting 310 million unorganised workers, and the National Career Service (NCS) portal have enhanced accessibility and integration of welfare services.
Institutions such as the EPFO and ESIC have modernized operations to deliver efficient healthcare, insurance, and pension services. Supported by policy reforms, financial inclusion, and technology, India’s model promotes inclusive and sustainable growth.
With this achievement, India now holds the largest voting share (30 votes) in the ISSA General Assembly and continues to inspire global policymakers toward equitable social security systems.
