The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has inaugurated India’s first dedicated Animal Birth Control (ABC) Training Centre in Jarhara, marking a major step toward humane and systematic street dog population control. The initiative is a collaboration between the LMC, Animal Welfare Board of India, Uttar Pradesh Government, and Humane World for Animals India.
Objective and Vision
The ABC Training Centre aims to strengthen dog sterilisation programmes across India by improving the skills of veterinarians, para-veterinarians, and animal handlers. Unlike traditional sterilisation drives, the centre focuses on the entire ABC process—from humane capture and anaesthesia to post-operative care—ensuring both animal welfare and public safety.
Training Programme Details
The centre offers a 15-day course that blends theoretical instruction and hands-on practice. Participants learn about dog handling, anaesthesia protocols, sterilisation techniques, and post-surgery management. On completion, trainees receive a certification, enhancing professional competence in animal welfare work.
Eligibility and Registration
The programme is open to professionals working in animal management:
- Veterinarians: ₹5,000
- Para-veterinarians: ₹1,500
- Animal handlers: ₹1,000
Applications can be submitted via the LMC’s official website, with the first training session beginning in November 2025.
National Impact and Future Plans
According to Dr. Piyush Patel of Humane World for Animals, the centre aspires to become a national hub for ABC training. LMC Animal Welfare Officer Dr. Abhinav Verma highlighted that the facility reflects the corporation’s commitment to coordinated, safe, and humane sterilisation programmes. The model is expected to inspire similar training centres in other cities, advancing both animal welfare and community safety nationwide.
