India has achieved a major innovation milestone, becoming the world’s 6th-largest patent filer, as announced by Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh. The country filed over 64,000 patents, with more than 55% coming from resident Indian innovators, reflecting a strong shift toward homegrown research and intellectual property creation.
India has also made a significant jump in the Global Innovation Index, rising from 81st to 38th place, driven by a booming start-up ecosystem, skill development initiatives, and policies that simplify patent filing.
The minister highlighted that India is steadily transforming from a technology consumer to a global creator, supported by Start-Up India, improved R&D culture, and increased accessibility to funding and mentorship—even for non-degree holders.
