The Union Cabinet has approved the modified UDAN 2.0 scheme with a financial outlay of ₹28,840 crore to significantly enhance regional air connectivity across India. Building on the success of the original UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme launched in 2016, this upgraded version aims to develop 100 new airports and 200 helipads, especially in remote and underserved regions.
The scheme focuses on connecting Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities through affordable air travel while ensuring long-term sustainability. It also introduces modern aviation solutions such as seaplanes and helicopter services to improve access in difficult terrains. A major highlight is the strong financial support system, including Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of up to 80–90% for airlines to make regional routes economically viable.
UDAN 2.0 is expected to boost tourism, improve trade and logistics, and generate employment opportunities. By strengthening infrastructure and connectivity, the initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of inclusive growth and the goal of achieving Viksit Bharat 2047.
