128th ETF Meeting of CAQM Strengthens Air Pollution Control in Delhi-NCR

The 128th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force (ETF) under the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) was recently held to review and strengthen measures for controlling air pollution in Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas. The meeting emphasised tighter enforcement, improved inter-state coordination, and strict compliance with pollution control norms amid rising air quality concerns.

CAQM is a statutory body established in 2021 to ensure effective coordination, research, and resolution of air pollution issues across Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Given the transboundary nature of air pollution, the commission plays a critical role in aligning actions among multiple state governments.

The commission is empowered to issue legally binding directions, conduct inspections, restrict polluting activities, and enforce compliance. It is accountable to Parliament, which strengthens its institutional authority. CAQM’s functioning is supported by technical expertise from institutions like the Central Pollution Control Board, Indian Space Research Organisation, and NITI Aayog.

Through regular ETF meetings and coordinated enforcement, CAQM aims to improve air quality, protect public health, and ensure sustainable environmental governance in one of India’s most pollution-prone regions.
