New Delhi: India has added another landmark to its cultural legacy as the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea, on 25 July 2026. With this recognition, Sarnath becomes India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sarnath holds immense historical and spiritual significance as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, marking the beginning of the spread of Buddhism and the formation of the Buddhist Sangha. It remains one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Buddhists worldwide.
The UNESCO inscription recognizes Sarnath’s Outstanding Universal Value, highlighting its contribution to world history, religion, philosophy, and culture. The site is home to iconic monuments such as the Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, and Chaukhandi Stupa, which reflect centuries of Buddhist heritage and architectural excellence.
UNESCO officials noted that Sarnath has inspired millions of people for over two millennia and emphasized the importance of preserving the site for future generations. The recognition is expected to boost heritage conservation, international tourism, and global awareness of India’s rich Buddhist legacy.
