Andhra Pradesh Approves Treated Wastewater Reuse Policy 2026 for Sustainable Urban Water Management

By Soniya:

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the Policy on Reuse of Treated Used Water, 2026, aimed at promoting sustainable water management across all 123 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state. The policy establishes a comprehensive framework for the collection, treatment, allocation, pricing, monitoring, and reuse of treated wastewater.

Under the policy, treated wastewater from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be utilized for non-potable purposes such as industrial operations, construction activities, landscaping, municipal services, firefighting, railway yards, and bus depots. The government has set phased implementation targets, covering 20 ULBs by 2027, 40 by 2028, 90 by 2029, and all 123 ULBs by 2030.

The policy also mandates that at least 20% of urban water demand be met through treated water reuse. Industries are required to achieve 20% wastewater reuse by 2028 and 40% by 2030. Specific provisions apply to thermal power plants and water-intensive industries located near sewage treatment facilities.

Aligned with the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047, the initiative aims to strengthen urban water security, promote circular water management, enhance climate resilience, and reduce pressure on freshwater resources. The policy marks a significant step toward sustainable urban development and efficient water resource utilization in Andhra Pradesh.
