New Delhi | November 12, 2025 — A devastating car explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in Old Delhi has been officially declared a terrorist incident by the Government of India. The blast, which occurred on November 10 and destroyed a Hyundai i20 loaded with explosives, has claimed at least 13 lives and injured over 20 people.
What we know so far
- The explosion happened around 6:52 PM near Gate 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, triggering a massive fireball, damaging at least six vehicles and three auto-rickshaws, and sending panic through the crowded streets of Chandni Chowk and Lal Qila.
- CCTV footage obtained by investigators shows a slow-moving vehicle in the parking area belonging to the historic complex seconds before it exploded.
- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has now taken over the investigation from the Delhi Police, and a case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Act.
Key Developments
- The government has declared the incident as a terror attack and passed a resolution underlining the nation’s “zero-tolerance” policy towards terrorism.
- A cache of 2,900 kg of explosives seized from Faridabad on the same day is believed to be potentially linked to the blast, raising concerns of a coordinated terror module.
- Bodies of the deceased have been shifted to a mortuary at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, and the Delhi Government has announced ₹10 lakh in ex-gratia for each death, ₹5 lakh for permanent disability, and ₹2 lakh for serious injuries.
Security & On-ground Response
- Security has been tightened across Delhi, with multiple metro stations, the international airport, and other high-risk zones placed under enhanced surveillance.
- The Red Fort precinct and the Lal Qila Metro Station have been temporarily closed, and traffic rerouted from Netaji Subhash Marg while investigation continues.
Why this matters
The incident has struck at the heart of India’s capital, in one of its most densely populated and historically significant zones. The escalating death toll and mounting evidence of terror links make this one of the most serious security breaches in recent years. Authorities emphasise that all angles will be pursued rigorously and perpetrators will be brought to justice.
