Dr. Edith Nordmann: The Dutch Visionary Whose Heart Found a Home in India

By Pasupuleti Priyanka

In a world of fast-shifting global alliances, few leaders embody cross-cultural depth as gracefully as Dr. Edith Nordmann, Chairperson of the Netherlands India Chamber of Commerce & Trade (NICCT). A celebrated legal mind and diplomat, she is equally admired for the profound personal connection she has developed with India — a bond shaped by culture, warmth and genuine appreciation.

Born in Switzerland, Dr. Nordmann spent her childhood and formative years there. At the age of 20, she married and moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands — a step that set the foundation for her remarkable international journey.

Her first visits to India were driven by professional commitments. But as she travelled and engaged with its people, something deeper took root. She often reflects on the striking difference between Europe’s individualistic lifestyle and India’s collective ethos — where families share responsibilities, celebrate together, and honour generational ties. This sense of unity, she says, is one of India’s greatest strengths.

Her love for the country strengthened further through its food.
Accustomed to refrigerated or reheated meals in Europe, she was captivated by India’s devotion to fresh, hot, home-cooked food. Of all the dishes she tasted, the humble dal and rice became her favourite — a symbol of simplicity, comfort and cultural warmth.

Exploring Telangana expanded her admiration. The region’s balance of sweet and spicy flavours, traditional cooking methods and focus on health left a strong impression. What moved her most, however, was the creativity of rural women, whose culinary knowledge reflects generations of wisdom. Each dish, she observed, carries a story as much as a nutritional purpose.

Dr. Nordmann believes these women hold knowledge that deserves global recognition and encourages them to explore opportunities and step confidently into the world of innovation.

As she continues strengthening Indo-Dutch cooperation, she carries with her not only professional commitment but a heartfelt bond with India’s culture and people.

“I would like to visit India again and explore more of its cultures. Each state has its own beauty, and I want to experience them whenever I get the chance,” she concludes with a big smile.
