India Launches First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet at JNPA to Boost Green Port Logistics

India has taken a significant step toward sustainable logistics with the launch of its first fleet of electric heavy trucks at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Flagged off by Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the initiative is a major push towards decarbonising port operations and promoting clean energy use in logistics.

Currently, the fleet includes 50 electric trucks equipped with swappable batteries, enabling quick turnaround times and minimal downtime. This number is set to grow to 80 by the end of 2025, making JNPA home to the largest electric truck fleet at any Indian port.

A dedicated battery swapping station has also been commissioned to support seamless operations. JNPA aims to electrify 90% of its internal fleet of nearly 600 heavy trucks by December 2026, in alignment with India’s clean energy and climate goals.

This green logistics move is part of a broader transformation, with Indian ports investing in renewables, LNG, hydrogen fuels, and the electrification of cargo handling equipment. JNPA, already ranked among the Top 25 global ports by the World Bank, is setting new benchmarks in sustainable development, digitalisation, and operational efficiency.

Minister Sonowal lauded the initiative as a message of India’s commitment to lead in green port practices, while JNPA Chairperson Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh hailed it as a leap towards a greener, more resilient maritime future.
