FSSAI Launches Official Vegan Logo to Boost Consumer Awareness and Food Transparency

By Soniya:

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a standardized vegan logo that will become mandatory on approved vegan food products from July 1, 2027. The initiative aims to help consumers easily identify vegan products, improve transparency, and prevent misleading claims in the food market.

The newly introduced logo features a green square-framed design with a stylized “V” and a sprouting leaf, symbolizing plant-based and environmentally sustainable food choices. Products carrying this logo will be certified as free from animal-derived ingredients, additives, and processing aids.

The move comes in response to the growing popularity of vegan diets and the increasing demand for clear food labeling. By establishing a uniform national standard, FSSAI seeks to boost consumer confidence, enable informed purchasing decisions, and ensure consistency across the food industry.

Under the amended Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, food manufacturers will have until July 2027 to update their packaging and comply with the new requirements. The regulation was officially notified on May 21, 2026.

Vegan foods exclude all animal-origin ingredients such as milk, dairy products, honey, and animal-based additives, while including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and plant-based alternatives. The introduction of the official vegan logo marks an important step toward strengthening food transparency and promoting sustainable consumption practices in India.
