India Introduces HUID-Based Silver Hallmarking from September 2025

From September 1, 2025, India has introduced Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID)-based hallmarking for silver jewellery and articles on a voluntary basis. The move, led by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), marks a major step in ensuring purity, authenticity, and digital traceability for silver products, similar to the gold hallmarking system.

What Is HUID-Based Hallmarking?

HUID is a 6-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each hallmarked silver item. It allows:

  • Complete traceability of the article
  • Digital verification through the BIS Care App
  • Access to purity, hallmarking date, and registration details

Each hallmarked silver piece will now carry:

  1. BIS Standard Mark with the word SILVER
  2. Purity Grade (e.g., 925, 958, 999)
  3. HUID Code

Key Changes in the Revised Standard (IS 2112:2025)

  • New Purity Grades: 958 and 999 added
  • Simplified Marking: Now 3 components instead of 4
  • Digital Verification: Consumers can verify nationwide via the BIS Care App

Implementation & Scale

  • 230 BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 87 districts
  • 32 lakh+ silver articles hallmarked in FY 2024–25
  • Nationwide awareness campaigns by BIS to educate jewellers and consumers

Why It Matters

The revised hallmarking system improves consumer trust, enhances traceability, and aligns silver jewellery with modern digital verification standards.

In short: HUID-based hallmarking is a milestone in India’s jewellery sector, giving consumers confidence in purity and empowering them with easy, app-based verification.
