Hyderabad excels in Nature City challenge

Hyderabad is among the best cities and towns that participated from across the globe in the City Nature Challenge 2024 which was held for four days from April 26 to 29.

Hyderabad was making its debut in the competition this year in 2023. The city of Hyderabad remained the number one in the country and Nanakmatta, Uttarakhand was the second best. Hyderabad was ranked 2nd in the Asia region after Hong Kong and 13th in the world where 670 plus cities and towns from around the world took part in the annual global event. The top three places in the world were occupied by La Paz Bolivia, Monterrey Mexico and San Antonio.

The four-day event is closely watched by 527 observers who have done the inspection of 2,092 species of flora and fauna. These observers have contributed 34,388 observations during the last four days. The most popular plants were the Neem Tree (262) and the Sacred fig (135) and the most popular bird species were the Peacock (206) and the Red-vented bulbul in Hyderabad.

As reported by the news agencies, the election was watched by the people from all the levels and from anywhere. The number of attendees increased from 350 in last year to 527 this year.

The concept of City Nature Challenge was brought by Alison Young and Rebecca Johnson from the California Academy of Sciences along with Lila Higgins from the Natural History Museum. The challenge began with only Los Angeles and San Francisco as the limited cities. After that, it was brought by traders to other regions. The aim of the Nature City Challenge was to identify and record the urban biodiversity in the city.
