The situation took a darker turn when the caller, masquerading as an official, declared that the matter was being escalated to the Mumbai Crime Branch for formal complaint registration.
Adding layers to their deception, the scammers accused the victim of being entangled in suspicious financial activities linked to a notorious terror figure, Mohd Nawab Malik. By presenting a counterfeit FIR and police identification, they intensified their threats, falsely imprisoning the victim within his own home for nearly a week under the pretense of being watched by terrorist sleeper cells. They even claimed that the victim’s electronic devices had been hacked by these so-called terrorists.
Upon realizing the gravity of his predicament, the victim reached out to the Cyber Crime wing of the Cyberabad police, where his complaint was officially registered, kicking off an investigation to track down the culprits behind this sophisticated scam.
In response to this alarming incident, TSRTC MD VC Sajjanar took to the social media platform ‘X’, issuing a public warning about such deceptive threats. He emphasised the significance of public vigilance, advising towards attractive with such fraudulent communications and to document them to the government right away.
