Indian Film Festival Opens in Sri Lanka to Strengthen Cultural Ties

A six-day Indian Film Festival began today at the Trincomalee campus of Eastern University, Sri Lanka, celebrating the richness of Indian cinema and its role in fostering cultural diplomacy. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera, Governor of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.

Curated with support from cultural institutions of both countries, the festival showcases six films in different Indian languages, highlighting the diversity of India’s cinematic traditions. Prof. Ankuran Dutta, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), underlined cinema’s universal appeal and its power to connect communities across borders.

The festival is more than entertainment—it serves as a bridge for India-Sri Lanka relations, promoting mutual understanding, youth engagement, and appreciation of shared cultural heritage. With SVCC at the forefront, the initiative builds on ongoing exchanges in literature, music, and the arts, positioning cinema as a vibrant medium of dialogue and friendship.
