Indian Railways to Introduce Ticket Rescheduling Feature via IRCTC

In a passenger-friendly initiative, Indian Railways is introducing a ticket rescheduling feature on the IRCTC portal, allowing travellers to change their travel date or train for confirmed tickets without paying cancellation fees. Passengers will only need to pay the fare difference, marking a first-of-its-kind reform in India’s railway booking system.

At present, passengers must cancel confirmed tickets and incur hefty deductions — 25% to 50% of the fare, or even a total loss if the train is missed. The new feature will simplify this by letting passengers reschedule online through IRCTC’s website or app, making train travel more flexible and economical.

This system aligns India with global best practices, where rail networks in countries like Japan, the UK, and across Europe offer flexible rescheduling options. The move represents another step toward modernising railway services and enhancing passenger convenience.
