In a significant step toward inclusive policing, the Telangana Police has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support and safeguard the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. This move reflects the state’s commitment to aligning law enforcement with constitutional values of equality, dignity, and non-discrimination.
The MoU aims to foster a more inclusive and sensitive environment by addressing community grievances, providing legal aid, and ensuring respectful treatment by police personnel. It also emphasizes the need to reform policing practices to be more gender-sensitive and rights-based.
This initiative builds on key legal milestones, including the decriminalization of homosexuality (2018) and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which collectively uphold the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals in education, employment, and public spaces.
By taking this step, Telangana becomes a leading example in creating a safer and more equitable society for all, irrespective of gender identity or sexual orientation.
