UPSC Completes 100 Years: A Century of Merit, Trust, and Service to the Nation

New Delhi, October 1, 2025 – The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has completed 100 years, marking a historic milestone in India’s governance. Established in October 1926 on the recommendation of the Lee Commission, the UPSC has grown from a colonial-era body into a constitutional authority under Articles 315–323, becoming the guardian of merit-based recruitment in the world’s largest democracy.

From its early days as the Public Service Commission under British rule to its reconstitution as the Federal Public Service Commission in 1935 and later as UPSC in 1950, the institution has evolved into a pillar of fairness, transparency, and integrity.

Over the decades, UPSC has not only conducted civil services exams but also expanded its scope to engineering, forest, medical, and statistical services. Today, more than 10 lakh candidates apply annually, reflecting the aspirations of India’s youth from cities, villages, and tribal belts. With provisions for 22 Indian languages, 48 optional subjects, and equal opportunity for differently-abled candidates, UPSC remains a true “level playing field” for all.

As it enters its second century, UPSC is embracing reforms with digital tools, AI-enabled evaluation systems, and initiatives like PRATIBHA Setu to further enhance transparency and accessibility.

The centenary is not just a celebration of the past but a reaffirmation of UPSC’s enduring role in shaping India’s governance with merit, inclusivity, and trust at its core.
