US-Russia Tensions Rise Over Possible Supply of Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine

Tensions between the United States and Russia have escalated following reports that Washington is considering supplying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. The move has prompted strong warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who cautioned that such a decision would severely damage bilateral relations and undermine recent diplomatic progress.

The proposed Tomahawk missiles, costing about USD 1.3 million each, can strike targets up to 2,500 kilometres away—a range that includes Moscow and key Russian military installations. The idea reportedly gained momentum after a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly.

Putin described the potential delivery as a major escalation, claiming that Ukrainian forces lack the capability to operate such complex systems without direct US military assistance. He also asserted that previous Western-supplied weapons, such as ATACMS missiles, failed to shift the battlefield dynamics due to Russia’s evolving air defence systems.

Within the US administration, opinions remain divided. Vice President JD Vance confirmed the issue is under serious consideration, while Special Envoy Keith Kellogg suggested that authorisation for Ukrainian long-range strikes inside Russia might already exist.

Strategically, the move reflects Washington’s continued effort to bolster Ukraine’s defences amid the ongoing conflict. However, analysts warn that deploying Tomahawks could further strain US-Russia relations and risk broadening the geopolitical confrontation, challenging efforts to maintain stability and avoid direct confrontation between major powers.
