India Launches World’s First AI-Powered Traditional Knowledge Digital Library

India has become the first country to launch the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a global first that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to preserve and promote ancient Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homeopathy. This AI-powered initiative aims to protect traditional knowledge from misuse and support scientific innovation.

Praised by the World Health Organization (WHO), TKDL helps organize ancient texts, supports research, and aids in drug discovery. WHO’s report also highlighted India’s use of AI in practices like pulse reading, tongue analysis, and Ayurgenomics—which blends genetics and Ayurveda for personalized healthcare.

The move reflects India’s global leadership in merging tradition with technology, with strong support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of Ayush. The initiative is seen as a model for combining ancient wisdom with digital tools to improve global health.
