NASA, in collaboration with IBM, has launched Surya, an advanced AI model to revolutionize space weather forecasting. Trained on nine years of Solar Dynamics Observatory data, Surya predicts solar flares and eruptions up to two hours in advance—events that can disrupt satellites, power grids, aviation, and GPS systems.
Unlike traditional models, Surya uses cutting-edge machine learning to detect subtle solar patterns, improving accuracy and preparedness. It has successfully reproduced past solar storms and outperformed existing models by 16% in flare prediction.
Surya is open-source, encouraging global researchers to refine it further. By combining AI innovation with heliophysics expertise, NASA aims to strengthen
