Pulicat Lake Faces Ecological Crisis as Estuary Blockage Threatens Livelihoods and Biodiversity

Pulicat Lake, India’s second-largest brackish water lagoon, is facing a severe ecological and economic crisis due to the blockage of its estuary connecting it to the sea. Sand accumulation has cut off seawater exchange, leading to stagnant water, declining fish stocks, and worsening livelihood challenges for over 22,000 fishermen.

Communities from Annamalaicheri, Korakuppam, and Pasiyavaram report drastically reduced catches and rising unemployment. The blocked estuary has transformed parts of the lake into sandy stretches, crippling traditional fishing activities.

The ecological damage is equally alarming — the disruption of saline balance is threatening aquatic life and migratory birds such as flamingoes. Pollution, siltation, and unregulated development are further degrading the fragile ecosystem.

Environmentalists and local leaders are calling for urgent desilting, restoration, and sustainable management measures. Experts emphasize the need for a comprehensive, multi-state conservation plan to revive the lake’s health, restore livelihoods, and protect biodiversity.

Shared by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Pulicat Lake is a vital natural buffer supporting regional fisheries, biodiversity, and coastal resilience — its preservation is crucial for both people and the planet.
