The Department of Posts (DoP) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have launched India’s largest-ever village-level telecom network performance survey to assess mobile connectivity across over 5.68 lakh villages. The initiative aims to evaluate the quality and availability of telecom services provided by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL, helping identify connectivity gaps in rural and remote areas.
The survey will be conducted using the Department of Posts’ extensive rural postal network, with Gramin Dak Sevaks collecting field data through an Android-based mobile application. This large-scale exercise will measure network coverage, call quality, internet performance, and service reliability across all states and Union Territories.
The initiative supports the Digital India mission by generating scientific, village-level data that will help policymakers and telecom operators improve rural digital infrastructure, enhance mobile connectivity, and ensure better telecom services for millions of people living in underserved regions. It is expected to play a key role in evidence-based policy formulation and future telecom infrastructure development across India.
