India and Brazil Form Strategic Alliance to Boost Trade, Technology, and Global Governance

In a major geopolitical step, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the formation of a strategic alliance with India to strengthen cooperation in trade, technology, and international governance. The declaration follows Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s visit to India, underscoring growing South-South collaboration and a shift toward multipolar global engagement.

The alliance seeks to expand the India–MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, streamline business and e-visa processes, and boost bilateral trade from $12.19 billion to $20 billion by 2030. It also focuses on joint R&D, aerospace and defence partnerships, and digital technology cooperation—including Embraer’s entry into India and potential defence exports like the Akash air defence system.

Politically, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to reforming global institutions such as the WTO and UN Security Council, enhancing BRICS cooperation, and promoting South-South diplomacy. The alliance marks a strategic convergence of two major emerging economies aiming to shape a more balanced, multipolar world order.
