CCSCH8 Finalises Global Standards for Cardamom, Vanilla, and Coriander

Global Standards for Cardamom, Vanilla, and Coriander Finalised at CCSCH8 in Guwahati

The 8th Session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH8), held in Guwahati, concluded with the finalisation of three new global standards for large cardamom, vanilla, and coriander. These standards, recommended for adoption by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, aim to improve quality, safety, and consistency in the global spice trade, benefiting both producers and consumers.

The session, coordinated by the Spices Board of India, brought together representatives from 30 countries, highlighting international collaboration for science-based, harmonised food standards. India, a leading exporter of cardamom and coriander, stands to gain from smoother market access and enhanced competitiveness through these globally recognised benchmarks.

Established in 2013 at India’s initiative, CCSCH develops global standards for spices and culinary herbs under the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a joint FAO-WHO body. The new standards add to the Committee’s total of 19, strengthening consumer protection, traceability, and fair trade practices in the spice industry.
