Bhutan to Host Global Peace Prayer Festival 2025 in Thimphu

Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, will host the Global Peace Prayer Festival (GPPF) from November 4 to 19, 2025, marking one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings dedicated to peace, compassion, and global harmony. The event, organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Central Monastic Body, and the Centre for Bhutan and GNH Studies, aims to unite Buddhist leaders, scholars, and practitioners from across the globe.

A Global Gathering for Peace

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay described the festival as a timely call for “peace, compassion, and understanding” amid global unrest. The two-week event will take place at Kuenselphodrang and Changlimithang Ground, open to all attendees with live translations in English, Tibetan, and Dzongkha.

Major Rituals and Events

The festival begins with the Jabzhi Dhoechog ritual (Nov 4–7), followed by the Global Peace Prayer and Bazaguru mantra recitation (Nov 8–11). The highlight will be the Kalachakra Empowerment (Nov 12–14), conferred by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s highest spiritual authority.

Historic Bhikshuni Ordination

In a landmark move for gender equality in Vajrayana Buddhism, over 250 nuns will receive full Gelongma (bhikshuni) ordination between November 15–19 — the first such ceremony in Bhutan’s history.

Tradition Meets Technology

The festival will also debut the “Guru App”, a digital platform offering global access to live prayers, teachings, and spiritual resources. Art exhibitions and academic seminars will explore Buddhism’s role in promoting peace in the modern world.
