Odisha’s Sunapur and Puri Beaches Retain Blue Flag Certification for 2025–26

Odisha has once again strengthened its position in eco-friendly coastal tourism, with Sunapur Beach and Puri Golden Beach earning the prestigious Blue Flag Certification for 2025–26. This international eco-label, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Denmark, recognises beaches that meet 33 strict criteria related to water quality, safety, waste management, and environmental education.

Sunapur Beach (Ganjam district) received the certification for the third consecutive year, supported by strong community participation, regular cleanliness drives, and eco-sensitive infrastructure.
Puri Golden Beach, one of India’s most visited coastal destinations, secured the Blue Flag tag for the seventh time, thanks to high safety standards, smart waste systems, and well-maintained tourist facilities.

In the 2025–26 list, 13 Indian beaches were recognised, of which 12 received full certification, reflecting India’s growing emphasis on sustainable coastal tourism.

Both Odisha beaches feature trained lifeguards, accessible pathways, zero liquid discharge systems, CCTV monitoring, and environmental awareness kiosks — ensuring a safe and eco-friendly visitor experience.

Key Facts:

  • Sunapur: 3rd consecutive certification
  • Puri Golden Beach: 7th certification
  • Blue Flag: Global eco-label by FEE
  • Criteria: 33 parameters (water quality, waste, safety, awareness)
