World Television Day 2024: Celebrating the Global Impact of Broadcast Media

World Television Day, observed annually on 21 November, celebrates the enduring influence of television as a global communication tool. Established by the United Nations in 1996, the day honours the first World Television Forum and acknowledges TV’s vital role in shaping opinions, informing the public and highlighting global challenges.

Television has long served as a bridge between events and audiences, bringing stories of conflict, development, human rights, culture and innovation into millions of homes. Despite the rise of digital platforms, it remains a significant medium for education, awareness campaigns and public discourse.

The UN’s decision to institute this observance sparked debate at the time, with some member states questioning the need for a dedicated day and pointing out that television is not universally accessible. Nevertheless, the day stands as a reminder of TV’s continuing power to influence decision-making and mobilise global attention.
