The world of music is mourning the loss of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on 12 April 2026 in Mumbai at the age of 92. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in Indian music, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the sound of Bollywood for more than seven decades.

Born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra, Asha Bhosle grew up in a family deeply connected to music. She was the daughter of classical singer and theatre actor Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. After the sudden death of their father, the responsibility of supporting the family pushed Asha to begin singing for films at a very young age.

What began as a struggle soon turned into one of the most remarkable careers in Indian music history. Over the decades, Asha Bhosle recorded thousands of songs in more than 20 languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil and Malayalam. Her ability to adapt to different styles made her one of the most versatile singers the industry had ever seen.

Asha Bhosle was known for her remarkable range. She could effortlessly move from soulful ghazals to playful cabaret songs, romantic melodies, classical compositions and energetic dance numbers. Her collaboration with music composer R. D. Burman created some of the most iconic songs in Hindi cinema. Together they produced timeless classics that continue to be loved by audiences even today.

Among her many memorable songs are Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dum Maro Dum, Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, In Aankhon Ki Masti and Rangeela Re. Each of these songs reflected her ability to bring emotion, charm and character to every performance.

Throughout her illustrious career, Asha Bhosle received numerous prestigious honours. She was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest recognition in cinema, as well as the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award. She also received multiple National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards for her exceptional contribution to Indian music.

Beyond India, her influence reached global audiences through international concerts and collaborations. Her voice transcended borders, making her one of the most recognised and respected artists in the world of music.

Though Asha Bhosle is no longer with us, her songs will continue to live on through generations. Her music remains woven into the cultural fabric of India, reminding listeners of the timeless power of melody. Her voice may have fallen silent, but the legacy she leaves behind will echo forever in the hearts of music lovers.
