ECI Launches Phase III of Voter Roll Revision Covering 36.73 Crore Electors

By Soniya:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially launched Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise across 16 states and 3 Union Territories, covering nearly 36.73 crore voters. The large-scale revision drive is aimed at ensuring accurate, transparent, and updated electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections in different parts of the country.

The Special Intensive Revision is one of the Election Commission’s most important electoral management exercises. It helps identify eligible new voters, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and correct existing voter information to strengthen the integrity of the democratic process.

What Is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)?

The Special Intensive Revision is a detailed voter verification process conducted periodically by the Election Commission to maintain updated electoral rolls.

The exercise focuses on:

  • Adding newly eligible voters
  • Correcting voter details
  • Removing duplicate or deceased entries
  • Verifying residential information
  • Improving transparency in voter databases

The process plays a major role in ensuring free and fair elections across India.

Massive Coverage Across India

Phase III of the revision exercise covers 16 states and 3 Union Territories, making it one of the largest voter verification drives in recent years.

According to ECI data:

  • Around 36.73 crore electors are covered
  • Nearly 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are participating
  • About 3.42 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) are assisting the process

The revision will cover most parts of the country except Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.

House-to-House Verification Begins

As part of the process, Booth Level Officers will conduct door-to-door verification to confirm voter details and identify necessary corrections.

The revision process includes:

  1. Training and preparation of election staff
  2. House-to-house verification
  3. Publication of draft electoral rolls
  4. Filing of claims and objections
  5. Publication of final electoral rolls

Citizens may be asked to verify personal details, address information, and eligibility during the verification process.

Why This Revision Matters

Accurate electoral rolls are considered the foundation of a healthy democracy. Errors in voter lists can lead to duplication, missing names, or disputes during elections.

The ECI says the revision exercise aims to:

  • Increase voter participation
  • Improve electoral transparency
  • Reduce fake or duplicate entries
  • Ensure eligible citizens are not left out

The process is especially important before major elections, where updated voter databases help improve election management and public trust.

Focus on Transparency and Participation

The Election Commission has emphasized that the process will remain transparent and participative. Political parties, local officials, and citizens are expected to cooperate during the revision exercise.

Officials have encouraged voters to check their details carefully once draft electoral rolls are published and raise objections or corrections if needed.

With crores of voters involved, the Phase III Special Intensive Revision marks another major administrative exercise aimed at strengthening India’s electoral system and democratic institutions.
