India and Cyprus Elevate Relations to Strategic Partnership with Defence and Cybersecurity Deals

India and Cyprus have elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during the visit of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to New Delhi in 2026. The move marks a significant step in strengthening cooperation between India and the Mediterranean nation across defence, cybersecurity, trade, education, and maritime security.

Both countries signed six major agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering defence cooperation, digital technology, innovation, higher education, cultural exchange, and maritime collaboration.

A key highlight was the formation of a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism to improve security coordination and intelligence cooperation. India and Cyprus also launched a dedicated Cyber Security Dialogue to strengthen collaboration in digital security and emerging technologies.

In the defence sector, the two nations announced a Defence Cooperation Roadmap for 2026–2031 and signed agreements related to maritime search and rescue operations. These initiatives are expected to deepen military and maritime ties in the region.

India and Cyprus also agreed to expand academic partnerships and cultural cooperation for the 2026–2030 period to promote stronger people-to-people connections.

Cyprus additionally announced its participation in India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), reflecting growing strategic alignment with India’s Indo-Pacific vision.

Other important announcements included the establishment of a Cyprus Trade Center in Mumbai, the launch of the first India-Cyprus Space Day, and India’s decision to gift the BHISM Cube health initiative to Cyprus as a symbol of friendship and cooperation.

The new Strategic Partnership is expected to boost diplomatic engagement, trade connectivity, and strategic cooperation between the two countries in the coming years.
