Excellence in Social Entrepreneurship Award Recognises a Legacy That Has Transformed Thousands of Lives
Hyderabad, June 9, 2026
When the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) presented its prestigious Excellence in Social Entrepreneurship Award to Padma Shri Dr. P. Hanumantha Rao, the applause inside the auditorium was not merely for an award recipient. It was a standing acknowledgement of a life dedicated to service, inclusion, dignity, and hope.
For many in the disability rehabilitation sector, the award represents only a fraction of Dr. Hanumantha Rao’s contribution to society. For nearly five decades, he has stood as one of India’s most respected voices in developmental paediatrics, rehabilitation sciences, special education, and disability empowerment.
A Vision Born Before Inclusion Became a National Conversation
Long before accessibility, inclusion, and disability rights became part of public policy discussions, Dr. Hanumantha Rao recognized the urgent need to create opportunities for children and persons with disabilities.
In 1977, he established the Sweekaar Rehabilitation Centre, which later evolved into the Sweekaar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences, a pioneering institution dedicated to rehabilitation, special education, speech and hearing sciences, mental health services, and professional training.
What began as a mission to help a neglected section of society gradually grew into one of India’s most respected rehabilitation movements.
Over the years, Sweekaar has become a symbol of hope for thousands of families who once struggled to find educational, therapeutic, and rehabilitation support for their children.
Transforming Lives, Not Just Treating Conditions
Unlike many institutions that focus only on treatment, Sweekaar’s philosophy has always been centered on human dignity, independence, and empowerment.
Through education, vocational training, rehabilitation programs, counselling, speech and audiology services, and community outreach initiatives, the institution has enabled thousands of individuals with disabilities to lead productive and meaningful lives.
For countless parents, Dr. Hanumantha Rao has been more than a doctor. He has been a guide, mentor, advocate, and source of hope during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
National Recognition for Extraordinary Service
The nation formally recognized his immense contribution when he was conferred the Padma Shri in 2023, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for his services in the field of medicine and rehabilitation.
However, his journey of recognition began much earlier.
In 1995, he received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for Socio-Medical Relief, one of India’s most respected honours in the medical field. He was also honoured with the Man of Asia Award for his contribution to the welfare of persons with disabilities and received the Gem of India Award for his outstanding service to society.
The FTCCI Excellence Award now joins a distinguished list of accolades earned through decades of relentless service.
Beyond Awards and Accolades
Yet, those who know Dr. Hanumantha Rao’s work best insist that his greatest achievements cannot be displayed in a trophy cabinet.
His legacy lives in the confidence of a child who found a voice through speech therapy.
It lives in the independence of a young adult who gained vocational skills and employment.
It lives in the gratitude of parents who discovered hope where they once saw despair.
It lives in the thousands of families whose lives have been transformed through the work of Sweekaar.
As one admirer at the ceremony remarked:
“Some people are remembered for the awards they receive. Dr. Hanumantha Rao will be remembered for the lives he changed.”
A Lifetime Dedicated to Humanity
At a time when success is often measured by wealth, influence, or public visibility, Dr. Hanumantha Rao chose a different path.
He dedicated his life’s work to individuals who were often overlooked, marginalized, or underestimated by society.
His contribution extends beyond rehabilitation. He helped change societal attitudes toward disability, advocating for acceptance, inclusion, equal opportunity, and human dignity.
His work has influenced generations of professionals in rehabilitation sciences, special education, developmental paediatrics, psychology, and social service.
The Real Measure of Greatness
The FTCCI Excellence in Social Entrepreneurship Award is undoubtedly a prestigious recognition.
But for many who have witnessed Dr. Hanumantha Rao’s journey, the award serves as a reminder of a larger truth:
Awards may recognize service, but they cannot measure its impact.
For a man who has devoted nearly half a century to restoring hope, empowering individuals, strengthening families, and building institutions that continue to serve society, recognition is not the destination.
It is merely another milestone in a remarkable journey of humanity.
Indeed, history may record the honours he received.
But generations will remember the lives he transformed.
