Indian Army Unveils Army Uniforms-2026: Major Changes in Dress Code, Grooming Standards and Ceremonial Attire

By Soniya:

The Indian Army has released a new uniform code through the 174-page Army Uniforms-2026 Pamphlet, marking the first major update to dress regulations in eight years. Issued in June 2026, the manual modernises formal, ceremonial, and working attire while also revising grooming standards and dress options for women officers.

Major Changes in the New Dress Code

  1. Bandi Jacket as Formal Civil Attire

Indian Army officers can now wear the indigenous Bandi jacket over a full-sleeved shirt with formal trousers and closed footwear during formal civil occasions.

  2. Optional Ceremonial Sword for Reviewing Officers

Reviewing Officers are no longer required to carry swords during parades. However, parade commanders, contingent commanders, and designated personnel may still carry swords during major ceremonial events such as Republic Day.

  3. New Winter Working Dress

A Battle Jacket-based winter working dress has been introduced for all ranks. This will gradually replace the older jersey-based Dress 3A uniform by June 2029.

  4. Mess Dress Simplified

Pouch belts have been removed from Mess Dress Nos. 5 and 6, though they remain authorised for certain arms and services up to the rank of colonel during regimental and corps functions.

Grooming Standards and Women Officers’ Dress

The pamphlet also updates personal appearance rules. It prohibits radical hairstyles, unauthorised beards, visible electronic gadgets, tattoos, and body piercings, with exemptions for Sikh personnel.

For women officers, the approved formal attire includes sober-coloured sarees or kurta-salwar sets with ankle-length straight pants and a dupatta. Sleeveless kurtas and palazzos are not permitted.

Why the Update Matters

The Army says the new manual aims to bring uniformity, practicality, and a more contemporary Indian identity to military dress regulations. It also removes several colonial-era terms from official usage, including the word “Royal”.

Key Points

  • Army Uniforms-2026 Pamphlet: Released in June 2026; 174 pages.

  • First comprehensive revision in 8 years.
  • Battle Jacket to replace Dress 3A by June 2029.
  • Republic Day remains a major ceremonial occasion for authorised sword carriage.

The updated regulations reflect the Army’s effort to balance tradition with modern operational and social requirements.
