Road safety continues to be a major concern in India, with more than 1.8 lakh pedestrians losing their lives in road accidents between 2019 and 2024. The alarming figures highlight the growing risks faced by people walking on roads, footpaths, and pedestrian crossings across the country.
According to available data, India recorded an average of over 30,500 pedestrian deaths annually during the six-year period. National Highways accounted for nearly 31% of all pedestrian fatalities, making them one of the most dangerous locations for pedestrians due to high-speed traffic and heavy vehicle movement.
Pedestrian fatalities refer to deaths of individuals who are struck by vehicles while walking on roads, shoulders, footpaths, or designated crossing areas. Experts point to inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, unsafe crossings, speeding vehicles, and poor road design as major contributing factors.
Globally, pedestrian safety remains a challenge. In the United States, 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of decline. However, pedestrian deaths remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, with nighttime crashes accounting for a majority of fatalities.
The rising number of pedestrian deaths underscores the urgent need for safer roads, improved footpaths, better street lighting, dedicated pedestrian crossings, and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations. Enhancing pedestrian safety is essential for achieving sustainable and inclusive urban mobility while reducing preventable road accident deaths.
