Ahmedabad Sets Guinness World Record by Planting 3.61 Lakh Saplings in One Hour

Ahmedabad has entered the Guinness World Records by planting 3.61 lakh (361,000) saplings in just one hour, setting a new world record for the largest Miyawaki plantation drive. The record-breaking campaign was organized by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on 12 July 2026 at Bhadaj near the Gota-Godhavi Canal under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

More than 25,000 volunteers, including students, NCC cadets, government officials, police personnel, and local residents, participated in the massive environmental initiative. The plantation covered a 76,000-square-metre core area within a 91,006-square-metre site, where 35 indigenous tree species were planted using the Miyawaki afforestation method, known for creating dense, fast-growing forests that enhance biodiversity and improve ecological restoration.

The initiative aims to increase Ahmedabad’s green cover, combat climate change, improve air quality, and promote sustainable urban development. By using native tree species adapted to Gujarat’s climate, the project is expected to ensure higher survival rates, stronger ecosystems, and long-term environmental benefits, making it a landmark achievement in India’s environmental conservation efforts.
