Australia Expands Under-16 Social Media Ban by Adding Twitch to Restricted Platforms

Australia has broadened its upcoming national ban on social media use for those aged 16 and under by adding Twitch to its restricted platforms list. The rule, set to take effect on 10 December, will make Australia the first nation to introduce such extensive age-based limits on digital platforms.

Twitch Joins Major Platforms Under the Ban
Regulators confirmed that Twitch will now be restricted alongside Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat. Platforms that fail to implement adequate age-verification and compliance measures could face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million. Pinterest remains exempt after assessments deemed its content lower-risk due to limited real-time interaction.

Why Twitch Was Targeted
Authorities cited Twitch’s live-streaming format as a key risk. The platform’s real-time, unfiltered interactions can expose minors to harassment, explicit material and unpredictable behaviour. Officials argue that the lack of robust safeguards for spontaneous content makes Twitch unsuitable for younger users under the new safety framework.

Part of a Larger Safety Reform
The move is tied to ongoing reforms under the Online Safety Act, driven by growing concerns over screen addiction, grooming threats and exposure to harmful content. While the government insists the restrictions are essential for protecting mental health and reducing cyberbullying, critics caution that the ban may also limit access to valuable creative and educational online communities.
