The Indian Army successfully carried out Operation HimSetu, rescuing more than 1,400 stranded tourists and local residents in North Sikkim after landslides and a bridge collapse disrupted connectivity near Lachen. The crisis, triggered by heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions near the India-China border, posed significant challenges in one of the country’s toughest terrains.
Led by the Trishakti Corps under the Eastern Command, the operation ensured the safe evacuation of 1,321 tourists and 84 locals within just 48 hours. Rescue teams worked continuously in harsh weather, prioritising medical emergencies and ensuring a smooth and incident-free evacuation.
The situation arose after massive landslides and the collapse of a newly constructed bridge over the Tarum Chu river cut off access to the Lachen region. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure in high-altitude and weather-sensitive zones.
To overcome the crisis, the Army quickly constructed a temporary footbridge, enabling stranded individuals to cross safely. Evacuation was supported by military vehicles, while relief centres provided food, shelter, and medical aid. The operation was conducted in coordination with the Border Roads Organisation and local civil administration, which simultaneously worked on snow clearance and road restoration.
Operation HimSetu stands as a testament to the Indian Army’s rapid response capability, coordination, and commitment to saving lives even in the most challenging conditions.
