The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of a modern ship repair facility at Vadinar with an investment of around ₹1,570 crore. The project will be implemented jointly by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited.
The proposed facility is expected to significantly strengthen India’s ship repair capabilities and support the country’s ambition of becoming a global maritime hub. Vadinar has been selected due to its strategic location near major ports like Mundra and Kandla and its proximity to key international shipping routes.
The project includes the development of a 650-metre jetty, two floating dry docks, advanced workshops, and modern marine infrastructure. The facility will be capable of repairing large vessels up to 300 metres in length, addressing a major infrastructure gap in India’s maritime sector.
The initiative is also expected to generate employment opportunities, including around 290 direct jobs and more than 1,100 indirect jobs in ship repair, logistics, and related industries. Additionally, it will support MSMEs involved in marine equipment manufacturing and maritime services.
By enabling large-scale ship repairs within the country, the project is expected to reduce dependence on foreign shipyards, save foreign exchange, and improve the competitiveness of Indian ports. The initiative aligns with national maritime goals under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
