Oxford University Press Hosts Dr. Kota Neelima’s ‘Widows of Vidarbha’ at World Book Fair

Hyderabad, February 7 :The World Book Fair in New Delhi witnessed a major literary attraction in the form of Widows of Vidarbha*, a compelling book authored by Dr. Kota Neelima. Published by Oxford University Press, the book brings to light the struggles faced by women farmers in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region following the suicides of their husbands.

The book, based on years of extensive research, delves into the grim reality of agrarian distress and how the widows of farmers navigate life amidst extreme hardship. Speaking at the Oxford University Press stall  at Bharat Mandapam, Dr. Neelima emphasized, Women farmers live in extreme distress, often invisible to society and the state. This book narrates their untold stories.”

The book-signing event attracted a large number of readers and experts, who engaged in discussions on the ongoing agrarian crisis. Addressing a query, Dr. Neelima highlighted the importance of understanding the lives of farm widows through direct engagement, stating,”The drafts of my book were reviewed by the farm widows themselves. I am grateful to Oxford University Press for providing me with the time and support needed for such in-depth research.”

The event, organized by Oxford University Press, not only shed light on the widespread issue of farmer suicides but also underlined the resilience of the women left behind.
