India has received a major boost in its seafood trade sector after the European Union (EU) included the country in its updated list of approved nations eligible to export marine products. The decision ensures that Indian seafood exports to Europe will continue beyond September 2026, offering relief to exporters and strengthening India’s position in the global marine products market.
The EU is one of India’s largest seafood export destinations, accounting for nearly 19% of total marine exports. Industry experts believe the latest approval will help protect billions of dollars in export revenue while supporting employment across India’s fisheries and seafood processing sectors.
India had faced uncertainty after the EU’s 2024 draft list initially excluded the country due to stricter regulations related to antimicrobial residue monitoring and food safety compliance. However, after reviewing India’s regulatory systems and monitoring mechanisms, the EU cleared India for continued exports.
Officials stated that India successfully met key international standards related to food safety, residue control, and quality assurance systems. The approval reflects growing global confidence in India’s seafood processing and export infrastructure.
India’s marine products sector currently contributes significantly to the country’s export economy, with seafood exports valued at nearly $8.43 billion. Experts say continued access to the European market will help maintain export growth, strengthen coastal livelihoods, and improve India’s competitiveness in international food trade.
The decision is also being viewed as an important achievement for India’s agricultural and food export compliance systems, especially at a time when global markets are tightening quality and sustainability standards.
