Government Renames Central Vista as Kartavya Bhawan Area to Reflect Duty-Centric Governance

The Government of India has officially renamed the Central Vista redevelopment area as the Kartavya Bhawan Area (Kartavya Bhawan Complex). Announcing the decision during the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) Foundation Day event, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal directed that the term “Central Vista” should no longer be used in official communications and government documents.

The new name reflects the government’s vision of replacing colonial-era terminology with names that symbolize duty (Kartavya), public service, and national responsibility. The Kartavya Bhawan Area will include Kartavya Path, all existing and upcoming Kartavya Bhawan government office buildings, and the Common Central Secretariat being developed under the Central Vista Redevelopment Project.

The renaming follows the 2022 decision to rename Rajpath as Kartavya Path, continuing the government’s effort to create a unified administrative identity for New Delhi’s central government district. The Central Vista Redevelopment Project aims to modernize government infrastructure by constructing new secretariat buildings, improving administrative efficiency, and bringing Union ministries under a single integrated complex.
