India Celebrates 19th Statistics Day Honouring P.C. Mahalanobis and 75 Years of NSS

India will celebrate the 19th Statistics Day on June 29, 2025, to mark the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the Father of Indian Statistics. Organized by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the event aims to spread awareness about the importance of data in governance and development.

The theme for 2025 is “75 Years of National Sample Survey”, highlighting the role of NSS in providing crucial socio-economic data for planning and policymaking. Prof. Mahalanobis, who founded the Indian Statistical Institute in 1931 and established the NSS in 1950, also developed the famous Mahalanobis Distance formula.

Statistics Day encourages youth and researchers to recognize the value of statistics in shaping India’s future and promotes the use of evidence-based decisions for national growth.
