India has been elected unopposed to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a three-year term from 2026 to 2028, marking its seventh term on the body. The election at the UN General Assembly saw India receive overwhelming support from member nations, as there were no competing candidates from the Asia-Pacific group.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, expressed gratitude for the trust shown by member states and reaffirmed India’s commitment to protecting and promoting human rights globally.
Established in 2006, the UNHRC — headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland — is the UN’s top body for safeguarding human rights. It comprises 47 member states, each serving a three-year term.
India’s re-election continues its record of advocating inclusive multilateralism, South–South cooperation, and opposing the politicization of human rights issues. The move reinforces India’s diplomatic strength and its growing influence in global governance.
