India Designates Three Major Ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs to Boost Clean Energy Transition

India has taken a major step toward building a future-ready green energy ecosystem by officially designating Deendayal Port (Gujarat), V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port (Odisha) as Green Hydrogen Hubs. The announcement, made by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (launched in 2023), marks a crucial milestone in India’s clean energy and decarbonization journey.

These ports will serve as integrated centers for green hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and usage across key sectors like shipping, logistics, fertilizers, and refining. Their selection is strategic — ports are natural hubs for energy-intensive industries, international trade, and export infrastructure, making them ideal for large-scale hydrogen deployment.

The initiative aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export, aligning with the nation’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

The MNRE has also introduced policy guidelines and financial incentives to support the phased development of these hydrogen hubs, promoting public-private partnerships and cluster-based planning.

By integrating renewable energy innovation with industrial and maritime infrastructure, India is setting the stage for a sustainable, low-carbon economy, reinforcing its leadership in the global energy transition.
