India has launched the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) along with four major digital maritime initiatives to enhance port efficiency, transparency, and ease of doing business. The initiatives were unveiled by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal during the 37th Foundation Day celebrations of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai.
The Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) is a national benchmarking framework developed under the Sagar Aankalan Framework to assess and improve the operational performance of Indian ports. The index evaluates ports handling dry bulk, liquid bulk, and container cargo based on key indicators such as cargo handled, vessel turnaround time, berth idle time, pre-berthing waiting time, container dwell time, and ship berth day output. It aligns with major national initiatives including PM Gati Shakti, Maritime India Vision 2030, and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Alongside LPPI, the government launched four digital platforms developed by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS): a 24×7 Grievance Redressal Module under e-Navik, a Ship Registration Module under e-Samudra, a Medical Practitioner Module, and a Unified Ship Recycling Credit Note Module. These reforms aim to streamline maritime services, improve governance, enhance transparency, and support seafarer welfare.
The grievance redressal system allows seafarers to register complaints through multiple channels, while the digital ship registration platform simplifies vessel registration procedures. The Medical Practitioner Module strengthens compliance and certification standards, and the Unified Ship Recycling Portal promotes environmentally sustainable ship recycling and domestic shipbuilding.
The first LPPI rankings recognized Paradip Port Authority as the top performer in dry bulk cargo, Sikka Port and Terminals in liquid bulk cargo, and Mundra Port in container cargo operations. The initiatives reflect India’s commitment to modernizing its maritime sector and strengthening its position as a global logistics and shipping hub.
