ISRO Completes Nationwide Land Mapping to Strengthen Rural Governance in India

By Soniya:

On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced a major milestone in strengthening grassroots governance by completing high-resolution land use and land cover (LULC) mapping for the entire country.

This initiative provides detailed geospatial data at a 1:10,000 scale, enabling accurate insights into land usage patterns across India. The data has been made accessible to government bodies to support efficient planning, resource management, and evidence-based decision-making.

The mapping has been integrated with the Grammanchitra Portal, developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. This integration plays a key role in preparing Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs), helping local authorities improve transparency, identify resources, and plan infrastructure and agriculture more effectively.

By leveraging advanced geospatial technology, ISRO’s initiative enhances governance through better monitoring of development projects, improved disaster management, and sustainable environmental planning. This collaboration marks a significant step toward empowering Gram Panchayats and promoting data-driven rural development across India.
